Fellow Dudes, Let's Please Show Some Respect

Postby Supplanter » Wed Jul 11, 2012 7:42 pm

Things I know for a fact: there are women who post to our forums. There are members of our forums who are transgendered. One of the players in my MHRP Playgroup B is transgendered, for that matter. If she shows up on this forum, I want her to find it to be as cool a place as I do.

Please let us be open to the idea that something we write might make someone's life harder than it needs to be, and not do that to our fellow gamers. This isn't about their "hypersensitivity." It's about our good manners. :)

If you're going to be on the Internet, you need to be prepared for a torrent of immaturity and wrong-headed bigotry. Sorry, but that's the facts.

As long as people say things like this, it'll never get better.

I mean, it doesn't hurt to prepare for horrible people, but saying "you should have known people would be bad" sort of feels like a justification. There's nothing we can do, so it doesn't matter? Unacceptable.

I have a transgendered family member as well. Though she doesn't frequent this forum at all, the sentiment is much appreciated.

Dudes? Because guys are always the problem. Nothing bad ever comes from a female. You may want to reconsider your topic.

That said, theres an old saying about not going out in a rainstorm without an umbrella. Well, on the internet its always raining. You should be prepared just in case...

All this aside, I'm curious, I thought you were just a forumite like the rest of us not a moderator. When you start reminding people of their place and what they should and shouldn't do you automatically tend to rub people the wrong way. Smiley faces or not. I'm sure your intentions were good but telling people not to do something because your own moral codes disapproves of it isn't always the best way to get a positive response. Especially when there is zero reason to even bring the issue up.

Supplanter's post seems like a perfectly reasonable request to me. I'm a little baffled by the couple of negative comments.

Supplanter's request is in line with our all-ages, inclusive policy on not posting content here that is discriminatory, inflammatory, obscene, or out of place with respect to a diverse audience. While it is indeed the responsibility of moderators to monitor this behavior, starting an argument with others over this policy isn't helping anyone. Please remember that your readers include persons from a variety of backgrounds, genders, and faiths.

If you wouldn't want Margaret to read your post, don't post it.

Thanks! Let's be welcoming and encouraging. I'm closing this thread not to end a conversation but to get us back to others.

Cheers,
