Annihilation WTF?!?

Annihilation WTF?!?

Postby siebharinn » Sat Aug 11, 2012 4:24 pm

As mentioned before, I haven't really made any concerted effort toward comic books since the late '80s. I'm familiar with the Marvel based movies, and I have recently read through the Civil War arc to get up to speed on that.

I figured I would do the same thing with Annihilation. And what...the...hell? That is the weirdest, most unexpected thing I have read in a long time. I literally had no idea. I had a vague (and probably wholly inaccurate) sense of Silver Surfer and Galactus from the FF movies, but that's it on the cosmic scale.

There is something about all of this that appeals to me. Maybe it's the over-the-top epicness? Maybe it's everyone on the Verge talks like everyone in the 'verse? Maybe it's a reasonable explanation for mighty abilities, beyond the "botched science experiment made me mutate" meme? I don't know. But I'm eagerly consuming.

I've gone through the first 12 Thanos, Drax the Destroyer, Annihilation Prologue, and the first few Annihilation comics. I found this link (previously posted here by DaveTheGame?) to be very useful: http://i.imgur.com/tarIC.jpg

I'll be honest: Civil War didn't do much for me. I don't mean the campaign book, but the story arc and characters. I just have a hard time caring.

But cosmic sci-fi space opera? Oh yeah. There's that tingly feeling. :)

Cosmic supers for the win!

I liked Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest quite a lot. And I'm looking forward to publication of the event book & supplements.

I've always loved Cosmic stuff. Annihilation was very epic and didn't lose it's steam the whole way through. for that I really enjoyed it. it also played characters to their strength. everyone held the line. so to speak. I respect the writers for doing that. Conquest wasn't bad. Kings kinda lost my interest.

I love the cosmic stuff too.

The Civil War was pretty silly as written, but it looks like we'll be able to fix it's shortcomings during play.

Nevertheless, I'm more excited by Annihilation.

The main Civil War series, I thought, had great art but read kinda like the Cliff Notes version of the real thing. I honestly wouldn't have known what some of the happenings even were, if it weren't for already having read the MHR book (like the Thor clone, which shows up out of nowhere at the big showdown).

Now, I have had zero interest in Marvel's cosmic stories. I just never really cared about any of it. But I got the Annihilation hardcovers as a gift years ago, and I was shocked at how much I liked it. It is indeed a ripping good story, and well-told.

Whereas I literally grew up on that stuff. Starlin's Captain Marvel and Warlock, Englehart's Doctor Strange and Avengers, and a lot of Kirby FF & Ditko Doctor Strange in reprints. I actually read the original B&W Starlord origin in the short-lived Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction. Annihilation at al aren't just like those books, but it's fun for me to see those characters again, and they were mostly good stories in their own right.

I really liked the Annihilation stuff and the Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy serieses that linked all those events together. War of Kings seemed like a bit of a distraction in the middle, but the Thanos Imperative was a good finale to the whole shebang.

I'm *really* looking forward to the books coming out. Can't wait to start playing (and possibly Watching) the Annohilation stuff.

I am very excited about annihilation. and I too broke into loving comics thanks to Starlin. Mar-vell and Warlock are great. I'm going to fit Mar-vell into the game for my own satisfation. I didn't care for how warlock is portrayed overly in favor of the soul gem wielding champion. but, I guess I'll deal with it. as far as Civil war goes. not a great story. it had it's moments. but that's ok because we get to game it, change stuff around. Make it better? maybe?

Annihilation is great, as is Conquest. The Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy series that spring out are also good. By the time of War/Realm of Kings I started to get weary at the constant cosmic threats. Not bad stories, just tired of no time to breath or enjoy a status quo.

But they are all fun, especially the way they use older characters in cool ways.

I was on-off with Marvel after the Iron Man movies came out, and then it was mostly just Iron Man's stuff (started with Iron Man vol. 4, the Extremis Arc, and read on from there until just before Secret Invasion).

However, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was announced, and I looked at the characters therein...two of which were Nova and Rocket Raccoon. Wanting to figure out about this Nova guy is what led me to grabbing the Digital Comics Unlimited service from Marvel, and I haven't looked back. After I read Annihilation, specifically everything in that first column of that picture the OP posted, I was hooked.

And so now I'm eagerly awaiting the Annihilation book.
