I was listening to the Vigilance Press podcast and they were discussing transition scenes. Since an action scene can be about an emotional conflict--they were discussing Black Widow and Loki and that's all I'll say about that lest I stray into spoiler territory. Anyway, they were talking about transition scenes when I suddenly realized that they were sequels, in Jack Bickham's terminology.
Aside for explanation, except for the two of you who are nodding knowingly. Sequels (according to Dwight Swain and Bickham's definition) are the beats or scenelets or scenes you need to absorb and reflect on what just happened in the action scene. Jim Butcher explains it better: http://jimbutcher.livejournal.com/2880.html
I like the idea because it makes stories more of an emergent property of the game, rather like Keith Johnstone's "rules" for narrative improvisation.
Anyway, I thought it was neat. Now if I can just find some time and people to play...
