Infinity Gauntlet

Postby clackey » Sun Jun 03, 2012 8:34 am

Just got done re-reading 'The Infinity Gauntlet' trade paperback, and I gotta say, it's weird.

Now I remember thinking it was cool when I was 14 or however old I was when I first read it, but it's kinda trippy and very, very dark. It wouldn't really make a good event because most of the stuff that the heroes do is get their butts handed to the by Thanos. That's it really some of them even die, there is a panel with Iron man's headless body. Gruesome stuff.

But the only real players in the story is Adam Warlock (who seems to know everything) and then all of earths heroes that fight Thanos and really do nothing to him. Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer have a bit more of a part, but not really.

But it gets very existential and kinda cool. Not a good event, but really different for a Marvel comic.

This is the point that I want to make when I see a lot of posters asking for specific events to be made by MWP.

A beloved storyline and fan-favorite character plot does not necessarily make for a great "event." At least of the scope that it seems MWP is reaching for in their currently planned events.

Sure, The Infinity Gauntlet wrapped a lot of characters in the plot, but those characters didn't really get to do much of anything...as clackey pointed out.

Excellent point clackey.

I read an interview with Starlin recently where he said a lot of his Thanos stories were him wrestling with his own death wish and dark impulses. Reading between the lines, it seems like he came out of Vietnam with some heavy-duty PTSD. And at various periods he did a lot of "self-medication," including with hallucinogens.

Now that I have Marvel Digital Unlimited I'll have to add Infinity Gauntlet to my reading list if it's been digitized. I read all Starlin's 70s comics (in the, er, 70s) but not the stuff since.

In general, supers games haven't gotten the hang of "cosmic" stories. It's not just about power level.

You've talked about "hippies in space" before (not sure if it's been here, but certainly elsewhere). It seems like you have something to say. You should write up some Events/Mini-Events and run a cosmic MHRP campaign. With Skrulls, of course.

Yes, the working title of my unfinished, unstarted cosmic supers game is "Spandex Hippies."

So how would you suggest representing individual gems, mechanically, for something like "New Avengers: Illuminati"?

Maybe 2d12, or more, for each gems' specialty?

I think you just win with whatever the infinity gem covers. So if you are acting or reacting to an action, you get infinity dice. The trick to beating someone with them is not to engage them with the gem they have. So if someone has the Power gem, then attack them with mind based attacks. But a clever person would be able to use a gem in ways that would get you that infinite pool into an action.

If I have the mind gem and Hawkeye is attacking me with his arrow. I would get my D8 solo, D8 distinction and D∞ Mind to make him think I'm standing 2 feet to the side of where I actually stand. So... I would win. By a lot. If I hawkeye could think of a way that I wouldn't get to use that die, then I wouldn't and he would have a chance.

Just my take on it.
