Initiative System and PbP

Initiative System and PbP

Postby SomethingSomething » Sun Jun 17, 2012 12:45 am

I feel that the 'calling next person' system is a bit inane for PbP where you could call a slow person (thus leading to a delay), call the wrong person, or forget to call a person at all (thus leading to a delay).

Is there an alternate initiative system (of any kind) that any of you endorse or a popular houseruled version, maybe?

I've always just seen 'post when you can' used, but never for MHR.

How about instead of passing the baton, the first player to speak up will go next? If no one goes for X amount of time, then you can have a watcher character go.

Have you noticed that I never call it "initiative" anywhere in the book? Fun with stripping out legacy terms. :)

My suggestion for PbP play is that everyone is given a certain time limit to respond. It could be 6 hours, 24 hours, whatever. If they don't respond when they've been named as next in the action sequence, then the Watcher chooses the next player (or, if he wants to spend doom dice, one of his own characters).

Cheers,

For an alternate version of turn sequence you could use the characters abilities speeds. You would need to rank their abilities like god like reflexes, to superhuman reflexes or any other abilities that represent the characters speed.

I like the current system of picking the next player, it can really help with player setting up team moves, like the Fastball special or others like that.
Let's end this. Y'know, before something crazy happens.

Another thing to keep in mind is social media. I'm in a Smallville PbP, and when we're "passing the baton" we ping each other via Twitter. You could email, tweet, FB, text, etc. to let the next one know it's their turn.

Granted, it only works if you use one of the services, but it can be a great boon to the speed of your game.
