Speed too fast?

Speed too fast?

Postby Mystrich » Fri Jun 29, 2012 12:56 pm

Isn't Speed a bit too fast with a d12 Superspeed? I'd put Quicksilver at d10, but maybe I'm wrong. Even with quick googling, they shouldn't go about the speed of sound max, but d12 is run around the world in a few seconds.

[Young Avengers Fan]
Speed is faster than Quicksilver, and yes he can run around the world in a few seconds.

Speed's article on Wikipedia: "In Young Avengers Presents #3 he asserts that he is "Quicksilver fast", shown running from the eastern seaboard of the United States to Genosha, an island off the east coast of Africa, as well as search the entire island for anyone living there in the same amount of time it takes Wiccan to teleport the same distance. This indicates that Speed is fast enough to run across the surface tension of a body of water without sinking."

Speed on Marvel's own Wikia: "Supersonic Speed: Speed is superhumanly fast and his top speed is unknown, but he can exceed the speed of sound. He apparently is even faster than Quicksilver. [Avengers: The Children's Crusade #2]"

In the Avengers run of the late 90s or early 2000s, Quicksilver was able to run across the Atlantic Ocean, and travel faster than a Quinjet. It was when Diablo created a town full of Hulks in Greece, and the team needed to get Bruce Banner on site to help solve the problem. Quicksilver ran both ways, from Greece to the US and back (carrying Banner on his back on the return trip!) faster than a Quinjet could have made the one-way trip from the US to Greece. It was explicitly stated though that Quicksilver hadn't always been that fast, it was a relatively recent change (some of the team didn't know about it yet).

Yeah, I wondered about this, myself. I mean, I don't know Speed, but I wouldn't have pegged Quicksilver at Godlike Speed. Reflexes, sure, I can see that, since you'd figure his reflexes are as much faster than Spider-Man's as Spidey's are to a normal human. It seems like Godlike Speed is too much, though, since that's about light speed or beyond, traveling around the world in mere moments. I'd figure more Superhuman base, with Unleashed or some way to boost for an action or three.

Ground speed is intentionally slower than flight. It's also why we don't use the Enhanced/Superhuman/Godlike descriptors for Flight. Godlike Speed is Quicksilver & Northstar fast, for sure; running around the world in moments is the very definition of what those Marvel speedsters do. Thunderbird and Warpath (the Proudstars) probably have Superhuman Speed d10, as might Spitfire (Jackie Falsworth) in some versions. M (Monet St. Croix) has Superhuman Speed d10. Enhanced Speed belongs to characters like Iron Fist and Mr Fantastic (when he's using his stretching to make a ball or hoop, etc.)

Quicksilver has been inconsistently portrayed, speed-wise, so it would be hard to create a consensus at any rate.

Note that the Operations Manual states in the description FOR the Speed power that Quicksilver has both Godlike Speed AND Godlike Reflexes.

Good catch.

Of course that would still depend on the actual datafile(s) we see for Quicksilver when they come out and what periods they are meant to represent.

Hmmm...actually, that has me thinking.

I don't recall seeing Quicksilver on the Civil War: X-Men list. If we did, he'd either not have speed powers at all (one of the depowered mutants after House of M) or he'd have time control powers from Teragon (Sp?) Mist exposure (if I've been informed correctly...not as up on Quicksilver as I am other characters).

So then in this case, Speed would definitely be faster than Quicksilver.

Quicksilver's going to be in CW: X-Men, but he'll be a Terrigen-active version like he was in X-Factor Investigations at the time. He gets better later, though. He's also going to be showing up in Age of Apocalypse, though that's not quite the same Quicksilver.
