1st session of Civil War

1st session of Civil War

Postby Sentient Bean » Wed Jul 04, 2012 10:29 pm

Just ran as the Watcher our first Civil War session.

As I've ordered the hardcopy of Civil War from Book Depository, I had to read my mates copy of the PDF to prepare for the session.

Wow, what a blast.

Characters: Thing, Human Torch, Deadpool and Tiffany, an original character.

Reed and Sue were off on a second honeymoon so Ben and Johnny shanghai'd Wade and Tiffany (probably at the Baxter Building playing cards) when called out by the government to provide some security at the crash landing of a mystical artefact in Oklahoma....

I don't want to spoil the scene for others but wow, what a great session it was. I was able to pull a big reveal at the end and subsequently end the scene with a couple of D12s. Not before the players were able to cause considerable chaos and the Thing coming soooooo very close to ending the session with his first attack (SFX to the rescue!)! Come to think of it, it was all done and dusted in two rounds.

There were two new players and two players who had played in one session before. I think that the game and presentation of the rules certainly could do with some refinement (also before I forget, the mobs are much better formatted in the original book) but on the whole, it was very enjoyable, comic book-like and the players definitely want to kick on.

Sounds great! Any issues crop up during your game? I'm always on the lookout for tips.

I just ran the first part of Break Out for a "largely" new group of 6 players. By "new", I mean that only 1 pc had actually played MHR more than once.

That being said, we had a blast. My only "problems" were having 1 character start out separate from the others, and that I think having 6 pcs was a bit too much. That many pcs (as in any table top rpg) made the game slow down.

I'm looking for any advice on how to "jazz" up the Savage Land.

Any help?

If it matters, it looks like we'll have Captain America, Moon Knight, Iron Man, Iron Fist, Gambit and (maybe) Wolverine as heroes.

You can also do the downloadable extensions of breakout that happen between Act 1 and Act 2. It's included with the Thor downloadable bonus material and involves a cool fight with theWrecking Crew and tracking down Electro in Paris (These villains escaped the Raft)

I would personally make this it's own act and maybe throw in another escapee or two, then move to savage lands.

If I were running Savage Lands as is, I would structure it as Arrive, T-Rex, transition, mutate fight, escape Mutates if captured, Rogue Shield Outpost, fight Sauron.

I'll have the Marvel, please.

With some rejigging I just played that Thor scene as the New Avengers against Wrecker after Breakout, alongside the Sentry arc.

This leads nicely then into the Hand/Hydra/Silver Samurai bit with Echo as Ronin helping everyone out. Thank goodness for Echo getting statted and the Ronin Power-Set on Clint Barton's datafile.

I have no idea how the Collective arc could be done in MHR as it's pretty much pwnage by the Collective throughout. In all fairness, I disliked that arc.

The important part of the Collective arc is where Spider-Man gets kidnapped and interrogated by Maria Hill. It seems like it'd be easy enough to fold that scene into the Hand/Hydra/Silver Samurai sequence, with one of the Avengers getting black-bagged and a chance for the rest of the team to either negotiate or bust him out.
