Need Some Help Please!

Need Some Help Please!

Postby chaosnet » Sun May 06, 2012 4:13 pm

I am trying to stat out a custom character that has Elemental Control over the classic elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water). He will be a young brash emotional hero (the influence of the elements) and will be pretty powerful (I'm thinking D10ish). He won't have any specialties to speak of, but his distinctions will be as follows:

Name: Cameron James

Distinctions
* Do now, think later
* I never apologize
* Am I controlling my power, or is my power controlling me...

Looking for suggestings in how to squeeze in Earth, Air, Fire and Water Control...some SFXs, some Limits and such.

Basically I'm looking for some suggestions on statting him out!

Thanks!

What is his primary element? Give him d10in that. What is he weakest at? d6. d8 for the other two. Add an elemental attack at d8 or d10 for blasty goodness.

Can he use the elements defensively? Durability. Does the power of air lend him extra speed? That sounds like reflexes to me!

Here's the thing, we need more of a backstory to "properly" stat him out.

I guess the main thing that I was fishing for was how to get all four elements into 1 or 2 powersets without being overly phoney.

I guess I could do it like this:

Master of the Four Elements
*Elemental Mastery D10 (Earth, Air, Fire and Water)
*Elemental Attack D10 (Earth, Air, Fire or Water Based)
*Superhuman Durability D10 (Elemental Shields)
*Transmutation D8 (Change the state of Matter)
*Enhanced Reflexes D8
*Enhanced Senses D8
*Elemental Movement (Flight, Swimming, Burrow) D6

SFX: Elemental Binding (Afflict) - Add a d6 and step up your effect die by +1 when inflicting Elemental complications on a target.

SFX: Elemental Shaping (Construct) - Add a d6 and step up your effect die by +1 when using Maser of the Four Elements to create assets.

SFX: Elemental Fury (Area Attack) - Add a d6 and keep an additional effect die for each additional target.

SFX: Elemental Immunity - Spend 1 PP to ignore stress, trauma, or complications from Earth, Air, Fire or Water attacks.

Limit: Mutant - Earn 1 PP when affected by mutant-specific
Milestones and tech.

Limit: Elemental Chaos - Change any Master of the Four Elements power into a complication and gain 1 PP. Activate an opportunity or remove the complication to recover the power.

Only thing missing is Multipower, but he has quite a few SFXs already and didnt want to be a glutton. Not sure about the Transmutation as he could probably do the states of matter changes through narratives + stunts.

Power sets or power traits? Below, you have only one power set. If you're looking for one or two power traits look no further than sorcery. Just say it's elemental sorcery, and you're golden! I was going on having each element separate power traits to show that your character was stronger in one than another.

That looks pretty good. However, multipower or versatile would be a good idea. I prefer versatile myself, but YMMV and all that.

Plenty of good ideas here and gives me something to think about when I get ready to build The Elementress...one of my original heroes.

Do you ever get a feeling of..."the Bloat" when building custom characters? Meaning, you look and say "gee whiz, this guy has a LOT of power traits, or a LOT of SFX"?

I build within what I feel the character should be able to do, but usually on a second pass I knock stuff off thinking that "hey, that could just be a stunt" and go from there.

When is enough enough?

I totally see that.

I usually start out by jotting down a couple of notes about what makes this character unique...barebones, what makes Spider-Man, Spider-Man?

Then from there I build the guy.

Wherever possible, I try to combine powers/traits to have as few as possible and let the narration break those powers out individually...plus assets/stunts/complications.

But yeah, I often start a datafile with a laundry list of power traits before I start taking the red pen to it.
