New to Watcher role; Dealing with Assets/complications?

New to Watcher role; Dealing with Assets/complications?

Postby Keji » Tue May 01, 2012 12:49 am

So, I'm a brand new to watcher role, and I'm wondering bout this.
If a player creates a complication on my npc, and I want to fight it. Who do I roll against, the player that created it?

Yes; see OM54, second column.

Added:

Also see OM55 at the bottom, you can just spend a die out of the doom pool equal to, or larger than, the complication in order to get rid of it.

Thanks for the quick reply, that partially answers it for me.
What I was really wondering about is who do I roll against a complication that's 'fired & forgot' like say, if Iceman freezes someone solid and then flies away.

Do I roll vs Iceman's original roll?
Normally a player would roll against the doom pool against a stand-alone complication like that.

If you roll at all, you roll against Iceman. But you don't gotta roll, just spend a die.

You don't roll against his "original roll," you would roll against his applicable traits plus the complication.

But you're better off not rolling IMO and just spending the die if you want your villain to get free. (You might not want that; sometimes it's better just to leave someone tied up, a la the "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" bit.)

Well, it's a d8 complication in the first page(turn) against a villain, and there's only 2d6, so it's not an option.

Would I roll against the d8 + traits used to make the complication?

Personally, I would just take an effect die and apply it against the complication, unless it's something the player can actively resist. A player would be rolling against the doom pool + the complication in a similar situation, but the Watcher shouldn't be rolling against himself.

Although if you went that route, I'm not sure under what circumstances you would use the doom pool to remove complications. So maybe Duck Call Lass has the right of it.

If the hero is no longer there to roll against, you just apply the highest die in your villain's dice pool as an effect die. If it's equal or greater, remove the complication. If it's less, step down the complication. No need to include the doom pool at all.

I think I need to copy that down.
So if Iceman freezes Hydro-Man solid and then takes off to another scene, Hydro can then match his d8 trait(s) vs the complication each turn till it's down.

Better than I expected, thanks for the help.

If the scene has ended, i.e. there are no PC's in the scene, then you don't have to worry about it. Off screen anything happens that you, as Watcher, dictate.

If the heroes have left the villains incapacitated, but not in custody, then they get away.

No need to roll or worry about mechanics at this point...at least in my opinion.
