Please Clarify: Equipment Durabilities

Please Clarify: Equipment Durabilities

Postby chaosnet » Tue May 01, 2012 1:34 pm

Does equipment really need a Durability Trait?

My character, the Golden Gunman, has 2 gold plated Desert Eagles that fire Mystic Blasts. They never run out of ammunition and cause extra damage to Supernatural beings:

Golden Gunman's Twin Golden Guns!
*Mystic Blast D8
*Durability???

SFX: Destroy Supernatural (Dangerous SFX) when dealing with supernatural entities.

If I wanted the guns to be "unbreakable" then do I need to give them D12, or can I just say narratively "they can't be destroyed by conventional means".

No, equipment doesn't inherently need a Durability trait, unless it's protective for the character using it.

At my table, I would probably allow that to a player. In the end, it's really not any different from someone who just has an inherent attack power (which can't be "broken" the way a gun can). Presumably the character would also have the Gear limit so he could temporarily lose the guns anyway. But he wouldn't have to worry about them breaking.

Durability is most often included as a power in a gear-related Power Set when the gear has a protective quality. If you have a really cool piece of tech as a Power Set, it really doesn't need Durability unless it projects force fields, acts like armor, gets used to block incoming attacks, etc etc.

It seems to me that your gear is already indestructible because -- with the Gear Limit -- all you need to do to make it work again is succeed in a roll versus the Doom Pool. So, no matter what someone does to make it not function, all you need to do is make your roll and you've got your equipment back.

So "Amazon Girl's" magical bracelets would have a Durability, or would they just have an "Immunity to Projectiles" special effect?

Could be either, I'd think.

Remember, there are many ways to accomplish the same theme in these rules.

The Saint Seiya datafiles I have uploaded recently show a "breakable" power set, the "Cloths". If shutdown, they can't be recovered unless it's a transition scene. I wanted to make it so necessary as to be impossible to recover up until the end of the act, but then I would need some really good rewards for not having them for the duration of the act. But they are still protective gear so that's the only reason they have durability. Characters who have never shown any defining changes when not wearing armor didn't even require that power set.

I think she'd use Durability when defending against attack, and Invulnerable SFX vs ranged attacks when she really needs to succeed against a powerful attack.

The fact that bullets don't break the bracelets is just narrative fluff. If you want them to be able to break, it could be a way to explain the Gear limit, or just, well, narrative?

And Conscious Activation because she needs to be up and defending in order for them to do her much good. Not sure if there should be additional Limits for her needing to be aware of specific attacks, or for the old 'strength is drained if they're bound together' and 'goes crazy berserk if they're removed' bits if you're going for really traditional WW.
