Clarifications: Opportunities and Healing Factor

Clarifications: Opportunities and Healing Factor

Postby Dark Koala » Sun May 06, 2012 11:00 am

I'm in the process of preparing to start a campaign with some friends in a couple of weeks, but there's a couple of small things in the rules that I think I understand, but I'm not 100% certain.

First of all, when rolling opportunities, you loose that die if the Watcher activates it, right? That means that if you rolled a 1 on a d12, you couldn't use it as an effect die, correct? What about when the Watcher rolls an opportunity that is activated by a player? Presumably it would be the same thing, the die can't be used, but I don't see where it addresses the matter specifically.

Second, I want to make sure I understand the phrasing of Wolverine's Healing Factor (and to a lesser degree, the Second Wind SFX). It says "Spend 1 PP to recover your physical stress and step back your physical trauma by –1." That means that you spend 1 PP to remove ALL physical stress and move physical trauma down by one die facing, correct? It doesn't specify when it can be used, though--during your turn, any time? Even after you've been taken out of the fight?

You lose 1's all the time, whether or not the Watcher activates it.

Using this is an action and Wolvies HF is tied to his Stamina which is D12. This means that if his D12 Stamina die is higher than the Physical Stress that his 1 PP expenditure would remove it all. If Wolvie is at D12, then his 1 PP expenditure would "step down" the D12 Physical Stress to D10 and on his next action he could spend another PP to remove it all since it is below his D12 Stamina at that point.

One thing that may be able to be done is to spend a PP to use a 2nd Effect Die which could be use for his HF SFX:

Wolverine charges the Sentinel, claws reflecting the spotlight that the robot has shining on him. Wolverine has suffered D6 Physical Stress as he leaps onto the shoulder and allows his weight to carve the robot as he slides down it's back. He rolls his die pool and gets a 15 Total with a D10 Effect and has a D8 remaining. He spends a PP and uses the remaining D8 as an Effect Die for his Healing Factor, which is enough to heal the burns from the Sentinel's opening energy blast salvo.

OM07, under ROLLING THE DICE: "Set aside all of the dice that come up 1 for now. You won’t use them…" Also OM09, first sentence under the first diagram: "Any die that comes up a 1 is called an opportunity. It can’t be used for the total or as an effect die…"

So whether or not they're activated by Watcher, you never get to use 1s.

OM28 answers this question. I would quote it, but it's pretty much an entire paragraph, so I won't. Just read the right-hand column. In brief, you use your Stamina die as effect die for self-stress relief as your action.
