SFX clarification.

Postby Hembeck's_Beard » Mon May 07, 2012 4:21 pm

If anyone could unscrew my mind over this piece of confusion, I'd be very thankful.

In regards to SFX, it states on OM88 that these are usually used in the form of 'do A to get B,' now, for example, when I check Daredevil's data file, his grapple SFX under his Billy club reads 'add D6 and step up effect die +1...'

And I notice other SFX descriptions that start 'add D6...'

My question is, following the 'do A to get B' logic, as well as the SFX description, am I adding a D6 to my pool, and also stepping up the effect die, or am I donating a D6 to the doom pool in order to receive the SFX benefit?

Like I said, I've noticed this on a few SFX descriptions, and I'm confused on where the D6 is applied.

Thanks to whoever can answer this question.

I believe you only add stuff to/interact with the Doom Pool with an SFX if it explicitly tells you to.
"Heroes get shot, stabbed, burned, bludgeoned, poisoned, infected, disintegrated, irradiated, electrocuted, exposed to vacuum and fall from great heights. Being a hero is a tough job."

If it says doom pool, add it to the doom pool. Otherwise, add it to your normal die pool for that action. Grapple is +D6 to your action die pool, and step up your effect die, when inflicting the listed type of complication.

Thanks, guys! That really helps clear things up for me. Just wanted to be sure on the rules before I ran my first session this weekend.

Keeping in line with SFX clarification...

I was perusing that70sbloke's that70sgame site and saw his Green Lantern Power Ring write-up. Pretty darn cool.

One of the traits he includes for this item is "SFX: Immunity – Life Support". I get what's being done, but aren't SFX traits supposed to have a trigger associated to them to receive the benefit? In this example can't it just be part of the description of the Power Ring that the wearers can survive in hostile (but specifically non-damaging) environments? Or should a SFX trait be included to cover such a benefit? Just curious on what others might think about this approach.

Thanks for reading,

I could see it being done either way, but if a concept just calls for something to happen, then yeah, I'd probably just say it does happen and not give it a trait or SFX.

Take robots for example. I don't think they need to have an SFX or trait that says, "Doesn't need to breathe."

Mild confussion, but isn't the expediture of a plot point REQUIRED for any and all sfx to come into play on the "players" behalf?

No, only for SFX that specifically say "spend a plot point." Which is many but by no means all. Frex, the SFXs that include Shutdowns don't generally require a PP, nor do Area Attack, Multipower or Versatile.

That is how I originally understood it, however those you don't "pay for" with plot points or causing the doom pool to swell, are free for good effects. Especially the three you you mentioned. A near infinite about of "wide beams" targets at no "cost" could be very overpowering. That's what brought on my questioning of the understanding. Thanx for clarifying.
