Berserk question...

Berserk question...

Postby basspunk66 » Fri May 18, 2012 5:10 pm

Berserk states that you add a die from the Doom Pool, return it when you are done. Does that mean that until you action is resolved, it does not exist in the Doom Pool?

Say you are rolling against a 1D10 + 4D8 Doom Pool. You use berserk to borrow the 1D10. Does the DP drop to only 4D8 for that action?

Yes. That's what it does.

Awesome, thanks! :D Better to get answers than to simply assume.

Another SFX like that is the Beast's "Oh My Stars and Garters." But what if the Beast is being attacked by the Doom Pool and wants to use his SFX in his reaction? Frex, when fighting The Void. How does it work then? Borrow the die before the Watcher rolls?

Thanks,

Jim

I would have him borrow the die after the doom pool was rolled, so it doesn't change the result of the roll. Borrowing from the doom pool is more potent on the action roll because the pool is smaller. So if you're rolling against the doom pool, it's not rolling as many dice. If you're rolling against a Watcher character, you're removing the highest die so they can't use it.

On a reaction roll, the die has been rolled and probably used, borrowing it won't help any. IMO, anyway.

Remember, you return the doom die after you've used it. That means if you use it in an action, you return it once you've rolled the die, found your total, and chosen an effect die. The reaction isn't rolled at the same time as your action. This means that the doom pool doesn't change for the reaction, but (in case it matters) it is reduced by a die WHILE the action is taking place.

Cam, I don't have the book here, but I believe the text of the Berserk SFX mentions that you can take the doom die for 'one or more actions'. I think the wording is similar to that anyway. We've been interpreting that as the player keeping that doom die like an asset until he chooses to give it back, but must include it in every action and it steps up each time. So the hero is temporarily reducing the doom pool, at the cost of a big spike in the doom pool when he gives it back. I take it from your last post that we've been playing it wrong... :D What does the 'one or more' mean? Just that you can use it more than once a scene? Isn't that true of every SFX?

Thanks!

If the die is kept for more than one action, than yes, it would reduce the doom pool. But if you give it back before that, it won't. :)

THIS actually answers the question that I had in mind, I just did a terrible job of asking, lol.
