Thematic story-telling and use of multiple themed SFX's

Thematic story-telling and use of multiple themed SFX's

Postby konate » Wed Jun 27, 2012 7:01 am

How tough will you fellow Watchers be with the use of multiple themed SFX's?

Example: the Punisher has multiple themed SFX's that could seem to conflict if used in unison; such as, Explosives (Area Effect) and Full Auto (Burst). Or, Full Auto and Take Your Shot (Unleashed-esque).

These special effects don't seem to work well together as they are described thematically, but can work together rules-wise.

How will you deal with this?

I know I sound like a broken record, but this is just how I think when it comes to this game...

I'd ask the player to narrate how he is combining the SFX's if he attempts to do so.

If he can't see how to do it, then I have no reason to let him pull it off even if it is technically a mechanical possibility.

Now since you can pull off the amazing in these games, maybe the player can come up with a creative way to include them. In that case, if he put in the work for it, I'd let him pull it off.

Oh...and I could see some narrative combinations for those SFX's.

"The Punisher sweeps the parking lot with automatic fire, then shoots a grenade from the underslung launcher to blast open the warehouse door!" Explosives + Full Auto.

"The Punisher aims, holds his breath and pulls the trigger on his rifle to take out the leader with one shot. Frank immediately flips the rifle over to full auto and starts laying down covering fire to keep the thugs' heads down while he pulls back!" Take the Shot + Full Auto.

Ruleswise, Burst and Area can't be combined since Burst specifies single target.

Also it seems that no one would draw a guy firing full auto with a rifle in one hand and also tossing a grenade in one frame of a comic. If you can't do that, you can't pull it off in the game either.

Oh, I don't know, has Rob Liefeld had a run on Punisher yet?

Yeah...I can definitely see an automatic rifle blazing in one hand and Frank pulling a pin out of a grenade with his teeth.

VERY Punisher!

You people DO realize that they make fully automatic grenade launchers, right?

Listen, buddy! We're talking comics here. We don't need any of your "reality" creeping in!

(also: I kind of want one)
