Rules Question

Yeah, I'm with EF on this last point.

Narrative/Intent is about giving a flavorful idea of your action, but you also have to state the mechanics that you are trying to pull off.

"I throw a punch at the guy...hoping to knock him out of the train." That's a good start, but still needs to be followed up with something like, "I'm going to use an Effect die to cause knockback (a complication?) and another Effect die to cause Stress."

Narrative and Intent...flavor and mechanics. You need them both to really describe your action/reaction.

In practical terms, though, this was player new to the system. It sounds like he didn't know how to productively state his intent within the context of MHRP. And the thread exists because the Watcher was also new to the system. So it's shakeout cruise stuff. Now, Chaosnet can go back to the group and say, "Here's what I should've told you but hadn't figured out yet. And here's how we can handle that situation going forward." At the time of the incident, though, it appears the knowledge didn't exist anywhere in the play group.

Yeah, this too. We're all fairly new to the system, so being comfortable with the rules will only come with time and play.

Yea, it's always great fellowship to show your players that you overlooked something and it affected the gameplay, careful consideration of that ruling will put everyone in a more comfortable zone in the future. I can also see us improving a lot of the mechanics through this forum and fansites. I'm positive that I've helped at least one or two people with their understanding of the rules, for example.
