Multiple SFX in one and same action? y/n

Multiple SFX in one and same action? y/n

Postby Keji » Wed Apr 25, 2012 11:18 pm

So, is this possible? I couldn't find anything on the forum, and no luck finding it in the book.

Simple examples would be:
Focus + Healing
Focus + Affliction
Area + Affliction
Etc

If it makes sense, absolutely. +Complication & Area attack, yeah, no problem. Healing & Focus, why not? As long as it makes sense according to the power set and narrative. Hell, go for Healing & Area attack if it makes sense.
My apologies for occasional spelling... shenanigans. I typically post from mobile devices.

Cheers, much appreciated. It made sense to mix some together, but wasn't sure, and didn't wanna risk ruining game balance.

lol I think only very few things could break the game balance in MHRPG.

Well, can never be to careful, right?
I mean, some of the combinations are powerful, like area + affliction which can easily make d8 complications into multiple d10s.

Also, it's a new system for me, so extra careful.

I think you are misinterpreting (much like I once did) Affliction and Area Effect.

Affliction, you add one die and increase one effect die.

Area Attack, you add one die and effect die per target.

You still get only one increase, it doesn't spread out for each and every area attack effect die. So you'll still need to choose one target for the increased affliction, all the remaining targets can get a complication just not as effective.

Yeah, I almost did, but that's what I actually meant.
That a d8 and d10 effect dice could easily become into either multiple tens or a d12.

But it's also kinda cool to be able to combine like that.

As the others have already answered, narration wins. If you can reasonably make a case for an action, roll with it.

I think most of the "game balance" will be found in SFX costs. You only have so many Plot Points and for those that have a lot of them, that means that they probably used a lot of negatives to earn them. You can only step up the Doom Pool or your Stress so much before it bites you in the behind and HARD.

As Salsa said, I wouldn't worry too much about game balance. Just make sure you or your players work for the cool combos that you want. Give up a good narrative for the privilage.

The only real rule is you can't apply any SFX twice in one action or reaction (or dice pool), unless the SFX specifically allows for multiple uses (like Area Attack's mention of targeting X opponents and adding X-1 d6, etc etc). So you can't Focus twice, for instance.

On the other hand, nothing stops you from creating an SFX called Hyperfocus that lets you swap three dice the same size for a single die stepped up twice, right?

Along that line, Cam, would you do "SFX: Doubly Dangerous" as...

"Step POWER TRAIT down by -2 and add 2D6 to your roll. Step EFFECT TYPE die up by +2"

OR

"Step POWER TRAIT down by -2 and add 1D6 to your roll. Step EFFECT TYPE die up by +2"
