Here's... Aquaman!!

More of my New 52 Justice League. Here we have Aquaman! Outrageous!! The new line puts some emphasis on Aquaman, who has always been a joke. Nowadays I'd almost place his strength levels around Diana and Clark. He's being written as a real credible bad ass in a pretty good book.

Aquaman

Affiliation: Solo d8, Buddy d10, Team d6

Distinctions: Fighting Monarch, Nobody’s Favorite Hero, Short Temper

King of the Seven Seas: Enhanced Reflexes d8, Marine Life Mastery d10, Superhuman Durability d10, Superhuman Stamina d10, Superhuman Strength d10, Swimming d10, Undersea Senses d6
• SFX: Focus. If a pool includes an King of the Seven Seas power, you may replace two dice of equal size with one die +1 step larger.
• SFX: Wide Net. Add a d6 and step up your effect die by +1 when using Marine Life Mastery to create assets.
• Limit: Conscious Activation. If stressed out, asleep, or unconscious, shutdown Marine Life Control. Recover Marine Life Control when stress is recovered or you awake. If physical trauma is taken, shutdown Marine Life Control until trauma is recovered.
Trident: Weapon d8
• Limit: Gear. Shutdown Trident and gain 1 PP. Take an action vs. doom pool to recover.

Specialties: Acrobatic Expert d8, Combat Expert d8, Science Expert d8

Milestones:
Mysteries of the Deep: 1XP (when you first encounter the unknown underwater), 3XP (when your encounter with what man was not meant to know results in trauma to either party), 10XP (when you either give up a great treasure to its rightful owners or when your find leads to some global or cosmic scale crisis)
No Time for the League: 1XP (when some crisis draws your attention away from the Justice League), 3XP (when your take charge attitude brings you into conflict with another Leaguer), 10XP (when you either turn your back on the Justice League or when you single handedly save the League, proving your worth)

I thought that he had some kindve magical background...maybe that was just the hand from the 'old' universe version.

Gotta say, I've never been a fan of AM and your "Nobody's Favorite Hero" is awesome! I think the new books are trying to give him an edge as opposed to a guy that lives underwater and summons whales.

I would probably have used his distinction of "King of the Seven Seas" as his powerset and included the Telepathy there in order to avoid having 3 power sets.

I'm also not sure if he actually "Mind Controls" per se, but "Summons" them to him to help since THEY like him. It could be done as a Constructish Effect "Summon Underwater Denizens - Add D6 and step up effect die +1 when using Marine Telepathy to create Summon Underwater Denizens Asset". His effect die would be added to his pool for subsequent actions.

Now he actually may be able to dominate the fishies, but I doubt that he would do it unless it was necessary.

Being a King I may give him some Business Expertise...emulating running a "business"/kingdom.

Excellent work though, keep em coming!

yeah, the hand is gone now. The three power sets come from the fact that his physiology comes from a different source; essentially his conditioning underwater. The animal control power, as the book describes it, is the closest thing you can get to what AM does. The "how this happens may vary" part of the power should help you fill in the blanks or tailor it to how you want.

EDIT: Let me go ahead and try out your suggestion. I think limiting those... *ahem* limits... is legal.

Yeah, I was gonna suggest Constructs for summoning fishy assets instead of area attacking the fish. Other than that it looks good!

Pre-new52 Aquaman was in various places described as a Telepath, and a fairly potent one at that, with a particular affinity for communicating telepathically with aquatic life. Similarly, his brute strength and resilience has appeared in a lot of his appearances as a natural consequence of being part of a subspecies of humans who dwell on the ocean floor.

I was under the impression that, in new 52, Aquaman's trident was meant to be a magical artefact able to command the seas and storms.

I just thought it was a big, scary trident. Can you cite an issue?

I'm at work again with barely enough time (edit time, y'all) to get a copy and paste out of the pdf. Thanks for the suggestion. That's kind of the mechanic I had in mind anyway.

Probably next up as I continue to slap this project together is going to be Cyborg. Stay tuned and please leave feedback in your comments on Aquaman! :)

I might be getting sources mixed up - I don't read the Aquaman comics (too many others in my standing order already) - but I'm sure I've seen recent material describing it as the Trident of Neptune, and having it as a powerful ancient magical artefact, an heirloom of the kings of Atlantis.

that sounds like a big old retcon. don't think he does that anymore. I read AM regularly as well as Justice League these days.

Next "Let's Play..." will be an Aquaman episode. Stay tuned. He's going to battle Tiger Shark.
