Blue Cortex: Static Defense

I remember seeing a post about this in the old forums, but I can't remember what it was about. Anyone around here still enjoy it and have a method for a static defense for a character or NPC?

I was thinking of doing something similar to how MiniSix does their static defense. Thoughts?

Hi!

I don't understand what you exactly mean by static defense... A defense without moving (a parry with a weapon or with a shield without stepping backward or to the side), I presume.

But which kind of advantages is the character supposed to get when he does this "static defense" instead of a normal defense?

Static defense more likely refers to defenses like in D&D where you have an AC. The number is fixed, static. This is opposed to how Cortex games handle such things where every reaction requires a roll of the dice.

OK.

Very easy to do, then. Just take the average dice result as difficulty.

D2+D2: 3
D2+D4: 4
D2+D6: 5
D2+D8: 6
D2+D10: 7
D2+D12: 8

D4+D2: 4
D4+D4: 5
D4+D6: 6
D4+D8: 7
D4+D10: 8
D4+D12: 9

D6+D2: 5
D6+D4: 6
D6+D6: 7
D6+D8: 8
D6+D10: 9
D6+D12: 10

And so on.

A quick way to calculate this number during play is to take the maximum result (D12+D10 gives 22) to cut it in half (11) and to add 1 (12).

Ahh. Thank you. this is exactly the chart I was looking for. I remember someone posted this up (maybe it was you) in the old forums and I wanted to try it out.

Another way to calculate this chart.

Each dice has an average result of: (its lower result + its maximum result) / 2. Which gives:

D2: 1.5
D4: 2.5
D6: 3.5
D8: 4.5
D10: 5.5
D12: 6.5

So, when two dice are rolled, the two 0.5 become a 1, which explains the + 1 in the formula: (maximum result of the two dice / 2) + 1

When only one die is rolled (innate defense or defense without the good skill: "D0"), or when three dice are rolled instead of two (characteristic or skill of D12+D2 or above), the result is not anymore a whole number.

D8 + D12+D2: 4.5 + 6.5 + 1.5 = 12.5

The result has to be rounded, then. Down, if the GM wants to be kind with his players, or up, if he wants to give them a bigger challenge.
