Find Weakness and Self Destruct

Find Weakness and Self Destruct

Postby chaosnet » Sat Apr 21, 2012 8:39 pm

First time poster, long time lurker!

I am enjoying the new Marvel game very much and have just begun Watcher duties. One of my gamers has a character that has a Find Weakness ability (similar to Karnak from the Inhumans) as well as a "Self Destruct Mode" and I want to know if I made them "correctly":

I omitted anything that wasnt relevant.

Android by Pym (Powerset 1)

•SFX: Self Destruct – Spend 1 PP and Shut down Android by Pym to cause Self Destruct Explosion. SDE adds a D6 and the Effect is stepped up by +1. Once SDE is performed, the character is out until the beginning of the next Transition Scene.

The players intent was to explode, then use download his consciousness into a new body at his base.

Wired to Little Sister (Powerset 2)

Uplink D8

•SFX: Analyze Weakness – Add a d6 and step up your effect die by +1 when inflicting Weakness Identified complication on a target.
•Limit: Mutually Exclusive – Shutdown Android by Pym to activate Wired to Little Sister. Shutdown Wired to Little Sister to recover Android by Pym.

Now I use the Find Weakness as a complication, but should it be an Asset usable for the next action that can be made persistent with a PP, or does the complication work. Another question is how would an opponent step it down if it were a complication?

Any direction would be helpful, thanks!

An Asset would probably be better, since a Complication would be usable by attackers that don't share your ability to discern weaknesses, without you 'handing it off' to them by describing where the weakness is. So, you could make it similar to Construct rather than Afflict, add a D6 and step up the effect die used to create your Asset.

Alternatively, if the weakness detection is instant and you don't need to spend an action roll to counteract their Durability or whatever, you could just make it a nice big die that rolls directly into your attack actions, either only against targets with Durability-like defenses, or against anybody. After all, detecting somebody's weaknesses could help with inflicting damage on 'soft' targets as well. You could save developing Assets (which could be done on either action or reaction and used in the next reaction or action) or Resources (given opportunities) for those times you really need to work at figuring out how to take down the real toughies.

Well, the way that it is narrated is that he 'paints' the target's weakspot with an laser. During play, I allowed his opponent to dodge this laser painting to resist. In the two times that he used the power, the first was dodged and the second landed a D10 effect, which stepped up to a D12!

The player decided that his Find Weakness should work against people's fighting styles and such as well, not just against hard targets.

So asset, eh? Would you suggest still allowing to make the asset persistent?

I think I would go with an asset as well. Note that assets last as long as is narritvely appropriate, or until the end of the scene, whichever comes first. It's not necessarily just 1 roll. I could see it being persistent - the character still knows what the person/thing's weakness is.

As a complication, a foe could maybe change their fighting style or take some action to shield the weak point to step it down.
