The Same Power?

The Same Power?

Postby chaosnet » Tue Apr 24, 2012 11:13 am

Question: If my villain, The Axe Wielding Maniac were making a Reaction Roll against Luke Cage, would I add my die pool as follows:

AWM
Affiliation: Solo D10
Distinction: Live to Chop Another Day! D8
Power Set 1 Trait: Godlike Durability D12
Power Set 2 Trait: Magical Axe w/ Godlike Durability D12
Specialty: Combat Master D10

So without downgrading any of my dice, he would roll 2D12+2D10+D8? Can he "Double Dip" the Godlike Durability? I guess it could be narrated as him parrying, but I just want to make sure.

I think he would only employ the Durability trait when reacting to something that might affect him, not during an attack.

But hey, I'm still learning this game. :|

I had the same sort of question related to Pet Powers. My pet has the same power trait that I do (or in this case your item) and I wanna know if I can double dip.

Nevertheless, why are you rolling durability for an action roll and not a reaction roll? I know it can be possible in some very unsual ways, please elaborate further :D

Hmm, thought i said that he is making a reaction roll against Luke Cage.

Ok, so to clarify, Luke Cage is attempting to deliver a double-axe handle pounding to Axe Wielding Maniac. The Axe Wielding Maniac is going to put his magical axe up to parry said blow and kick Luke in the tummy if he can.

So as in the above question, would he add the same trait twice because it is in two different power sets, or would he only benefit from one of them in his pool?

Not seen this problem before. I can't think of any characters who repeat powers. I just statted a Lady Shiva with double reflexes and senses with the intention of rolling it twice, but mainly because it wasn't representing exactly the same thing.
In My ME hack i guess i have Krogans with natural armor and actual armor and would roll twice.

So i don't see why you can't. But why does the Axe have durability - surely it's a weapon?

The axe powerset would be statted out as follows:

Magical Axe of Destruction
Weapon D10, Durability D12

SFX: Dangerous
Limit: Gear

So the Durability on the weapon is a descriptor on how tough the weapon is. So if he (or she) is making a reaction to an attack where the axe can be used to parry, i would think that i add in the D12 to my overall die pool the same way that if i were attacking i would add the D10 for Weapon into that pool.

I think if the narrative makes sense then you should be able to use it. You have durability as an individual, and your weapon has durability when you use it like a shield.

The question is, in the above example are you really using your own durability in addition to the weapon's? As a Watcher, I think I would encourage you to look at Power Set 1 and see if you had another power that made sense.

yes. you most certainly can use the durability of your character and the durability of the axe since you narrated very clearly what you were doing (blocking with the axe). If the narration makes your intent clear than the dice are there to back you up.

As Cam has stated before, you narrate and then use the mechanics to make the narration work. Unlike other RPGs it not the mechanics first, then fit the narration to the mechanics. Although there may come one or two remote situations where this may be an issue but I believe the system was designed to keep that issue out of play.

Some of the posters have already posted my thoughts on the matter, but I'll share anyway.

Yeah, narrative is your deciding factor.

If you have two power sets, no matter what traits are in them, and you can narrate a use for both power sets, then you can pull a die from each of those power sets for your dice pool.

The key is always narration.

A better question might be, why did the creating player/watcher feel the need to double stat the power on the character? Was the stat really necessary in both power sets?

The answers might be yes, but only the creater can know that.

Captain America actually has Durability in both power sets - d8 from his enhanced body, and d12 from his Shield.
