Act 1, Scene 6: The Big Man’s Hideout, NYC
Doom Pool: 3D6+D8

“Exactly five seconds later,” Spider-Man is swinging over the hideout when a lasso comes out of the skylight and ensnares him! Spider-Man is pulled down through the skylight, where he finds the Big Man and the Enforcers.

The Watcher will spend a D8 from the doom pool (3D6 left) to beat Spider-Man’s senses and initiate a surprise attack!
Montana: Team D8 + Master of the Lariat D8 + Stretching D6 + Grapple SFX D6 = 2D6+2D8 (6, 2, 1, 8) = 14 and D6 effect. The effect die is stepped up to D8 because of the Grapple SFX.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 = 3D8+D10 (3, 5, 2, 5) = 10 and D8 effect.
Montana gives Spider-Man a D8 Lassoed complication.

Big Man: “Good work, Montana! And now, get rid of Spider-Man once and for all!”
Spider-Man: “The Big Man! And the Enforcers! I’ve got you all together!”
Fancy Dan: “Correction, my friend! It’s we who have you! Get him, Ox!”

Round 1 starts. Spider-Man goes first. He will naturally try to escape Montana’s lasso.

Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Strength D10 + Acrobatics D8 = 3D8+D10 (8, 3, 7, 2) = 15 and D10 effect.
Montana: Team D8 + Master of the Lariat D8 + Lassoed D8 = 3D8 (1, 8, 3) = 11 and D4 effect.
Spider-Man removes the Lassoed complication.

Spider-Man wriggles out of the lasso and picks the Big Man to go next. The Big Man will exit the scene, confident that his Enforcers can handle the wall-crawler. He then chooses Montana to go next. Montana tries to lasso our hero once again.

Montana: Team D8 + Master of the Lariat D8 + Stretching D6 + Grapple SFX D6 = 2D6+2D8 (1, 3, 4, 7) = 11 and D6 effect. The effect die is stepped up to D8 because of the Grapple SFX.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 = 3D8+D10 (6, 4, 6, 2) = 12 and D10 effect.

Spider-Man leaps over the lariat. Montana picks Ox to go next. Ox comes at Spider-Man, swinging hard.

Ox: Team D8 + Dimwit Bruiser D8 + Strength D6 + Combat D6 = 2D6+D10 (6, 4, 2) = 10 and D10 effect. Ox is using his Focus SFX to combine his 2D8 into a D10.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 = 3D8+D10 (7, 4, 5, 10) = 12 and D10 effect. Spider-Man takes just enough to beat Ox's total, and saves the D10 for his effect die. Peter will spend 1 PP (2 left) to use his effect die as D10 physical stress on Ox.

Ox swings at Spider-Man, who ducks down and punches the big guy in the gut.

Spider-Man: “Even a real ox couldn’t ‘get’ me, so no phony one is gonna do it! And you can’t catch Spider-Man twice with the same rope trick, mister!”

Ox picks Fancy Dan to go next. Fancy Dan will dance around Spider-Man, trying to set him up for another attack.

Fancy Dan is taking the support action, opposed by Spider-Man.
Fancy Dan: Team D8 + Small But Dangerous D8 + Martial Arts D6 + Acrobatics D8 = D6+3D8 (4, 7, 1, 3) = 11 and D8 effect.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Strength D10 + Combat D8 = 3D8+D10 (7, 4, 2, 5) = 12 and D8 effect. Peter will spend 1 PP (1 left) to use his effect die as D8 physical stress on Fancy Dan.

Fancy Dan dodges Spider-Man’s first few punches, but zigs when he should have zagged and gets hit.

Spider-Man: “Hey! I missed! Never saw anyone move so fast!”
Fancy Dan: “Don’t let my size fool you, wise-guy! They don’t call me Fancy Dan for nothing!”
Spider-Man: “And they don’t call me Spider-Man for nothing! Fast as you are, my spider-sense and spider reflexes will help me to nail you… like this!”

Round 2 starts. Fancy Dan chooses Montana to start the round, who tries to lasso Spider-Man’s wrist.

Montana: Team D8 + Master of the Lariat D8 + Stretching D6 + Grapple SFX D6 = 2D6+2D8 (4, 5, 1, 7) = 12 and D6 effect. The effect die is stepped up to D8 because of the Grapple SFX.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 = 3D8+D10 (3, 1, 1, 5) = 8 and D4 effect.
Peter gains 1 PP (2 total) for rolling the 1’s, and the doom pool gains a D8 (3D6+D8 total).
Montana gives Spider-Man a D8 Lassoed Wrist complication.

As Spider-Man knocks Dan aside, Montana’s lasso settles over and tightens around his wrist. Montana picks Ox to go next. Before Spidey can tug off the lariat, Ox comes barreling at him.

Ox: Team D8 + Dimwit Bruiser D8 + Strength D6 + Combat D6 + Lassoed Wrist D8 = 2D6+D8+D10 (1, 5, 7, 9) = 16 and D6 effect. Ox is using his Focus SFX to combine two of his D8s into a D10.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 + Ox’s Stress D10 = 3D8+2D10 (6, 7, 1, 3, 3) = 13 and D10 effect.
Peter gains 1 PP (2 total) for rolling a 1, and the doom pool will step up a D6 to D8 (2D6+2D8 total).
Ox’s effect die is stepped down to D4 from Spider-Man’s superior D10 effect die. Spider-Man takes D4 physical stress.

While Montana tugs on Spider-Man’s arm, Ox smacks him in the jaw with his fist. But Spidey manages to pull back enough from the blow to make it a glancing shot. Ox selects our hero to go next. Spider-Man attempts to wriggle out of Montana’s rope.

Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 = 3D8+D10 (3, 4, 7, 7) = 14 and D8 effect.
Montana: Team D8 + Master of the Lariat D8 + Lassoed Wrist D8 + Spider-Man’s Stress D4 = D4+3D8 (1, 2, 3, 1) = 5 and D4 effect.
Spider-Man’s effect die is stepped up to D10 by the extraordinary success. Spider-Man removes the Lassoed Wrist complication.

Spider-Man does a backflip, loosening the rope in the process. Peter picks Fancy Dan to go next, who will attempt a judo chop on the wall-crawler.

Fancy Dan: Team D8 + Small But Dangerous D8 + Martial Arts D6 + Combat D8 + Spider-Man’s Stress D4 = D4+D6+3D8 (4, 5, 2, 8, 7) = 15 and D8 effect. The Watcher will spend a D6 from the doom pool (D6+2D8 left) to add the 5 to the total, for 20 and D8 effect.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 + Fancy Dan’s Stress D8 = 4D8+D10 (7, 2, 3, 6, 3) = 13 and D10 effect. Peter spends 1 PP (1 left) to add a 3 to the total, for 16 and D10 effect. It doesn’t change the hit, but it avoids an extraordinary success.
Fancy Dan’s effect die is stepped down to D6 by Spider-Man’s superior D10 effect die. Spider-Man takes D6 physical stress.

Fancy Dan’s fists pummel Spider-Man, who is starting to show signs of tiring out.

Round 3 starts. Dan selects Ox to go first in the round. Ox may not be the best at what he does, but he will do what he does best: punch people.

Ox: Team D8 + Dimwit Bruiser D8 + Strength D6 + Combat D6 + Spider-Man’s Stress D6 = D6+3D8 (2, 7, 2, 8) = 15 and D8 effect. Ox is using his Focus SFX to combine two of his D6s into a D8.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 + Ox’s Stress D10 = 3D8+2D10 (3, 5, 1, 5, 2) = 10 and D10 effect.
Peter gains 1 PP (2 total) for rolling a 1, and the doom pool step up the last D6 to a D8 (3D8 total).
Ox’s effect die is stepped down to D6 from Spider-Man’s superior D10 effect die. Spider-Man’s physical stress is stepped up to D8.

Ox gets Spider-Man in the kisser. Ox allows Spidey to go next, who will hit back.

Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Strength D10 + Combat D8 + Ox’s Stress D10 = 3D8+2D10 (3, 8, 3, 3, 6) = 14 and D10 effect.
Ox: Team D8 + Dimwit Bruiser D8 + Durability D6 + Combat D6 + Spider-Man’s Stress D8 = 4D8 (1, 8, 2, 4) = 12 and D8 effect.
Ox’s physical stress is stepped up to D12.

Fancy Dan: “He’s strong… and swift… but it’s still three against one… and when a guy as fast as Fancy Dan is also a judo expert, what chance can Spider-Man have?”
Ox: “Stop flappin’ your lips and keep fightin’!! He’s a long way from bein’ licked yet!”
Spider-Man: “You said a mouthful, cuddles!”
Ox: “Unghh!”

Ox reels from the blow. Spider-Man picks Montana to go next, who will do the only thing he really can in a fight, and throw his lasso.

Montana: Team D8 + Master of the Lariat D8 + Stretching D6 + Grapple SFX D6 + Spider-Man’s Stress D8 = 2D6+3D8 (6, 5, 8, 2, 8) = 16 and D8 effect. The effect die is stepped up to D10 because of the Grapple SFX.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 = 3D8+D10 (8, 6, 3, 3) = 14 and D10 effect. Peter will spend 1 PP (1 left) to add a 3 to his total, for 17 and D10 effect.

Spider-Man jumps over the lariat that tries to nab his feet. Montana chooses Fancy Dan for the last action in the round. Dan will try to land a knock-out blow on Spidey.

Fancy Dan: Team D8 + Small But Dangerous D8 + Martial Arts D6 + Combat D8 + Spider-Man’s Stress D8 + Doom Pool D8 = D6+3D8+D10 (4, 2, 1, 6, 3) = 10 and D10 effect. Fancy Dan is using his Focus SFX to combine two of his D8s into a D10. The doom pool is at 2D8.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 + Fancy Dan’s Stress D8 = 4D8+D10 (2, 1, 1, 8, 6) = 14 and D8 effect.
Peter gains 1 PP (2 total) for rolling the 1’s, and the doom pool will step up its D8s to D10s (2D10 total).

Dan’s attack is clumsy, and Spidey dodges it without too much trouble. But he’s having trouble knocking these guys out, and he is starting to think that discretion is the better part of valor.

Spider-Man: “Getting weak! Doctor told me to take it easy for a while! My body hasn’t yet replenished the spider blood cells which I lost in the transfusion!”

Round 4 starts. It’s a new round, and Fancy Dan lets Ox start it off.

Ox: Team D8 + Dimwit Bruiser D8 + Strength D6 + Combat D6 + Spider-Man’s Stress D8 + Doom Pool D10 = 4D8+D10 (3, 2, 4, 4, 9) = 13 and D8 effect. Ox is using his Focus SFX to combine two of his D6s into a D8. The doom pool is at D10.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 + Ox’s Stress D10 = 3D8+2D10 (8, 5, 7, 8, 3) = 16 and D10 effect. Peter will spend 1 PP (1 left) to keep his effect die, and he will use it to change the Lit Room scene distinction into a Pitch-Black Room scene distinction.

Spider-Man leaps straight up to avoid Ox’s charge, where he can reach the room’s sole light fixture. He takes out the light, plunging the room into darkness. Guided by his spider-sense, he easily escapes as the Enforcers fumble around.

Outside, Spider-Man hides in an alley and catches his breath. A few minutes pass, and Spidey spots JJJ walking down the street, away from the hideout! Could Jonah be the Big Man?!

Spider-Man: “The Big Man would have to be someone smart, someone with money… someone who knows what’s going on! But I can’t believe that Jonah himself…”

Act 1, Scene 7 (Transition): Aunt May’s House
Doom Pool: D10

Peter gets back home and tries to call Betty Brant. She eventually picks up her phone, obviously crying, but all she will say is that the two can talk tomorrow. After hanging up, Betty resolves to leave town, lest Peter’s concern for her get him into trouble, too.

Peter’s physical stress is stepped back to D6. He will attempt to recover while resting at home.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hero D8 + Stamina D8 = 3D8 (7, 5, 2) = 12 and D8 effect.
Doom Pool: D10 + Spider-Man’s Stress D6 = D6+D10 (3, 6) = 9 and D4 effect.
Spider-Man’s physical stress is removed.

The next day, Peter heads to the Bugle to talk to Betty, only to be informed by Jonah that she left town. JJJ isn’t happy. “Blast the luck! Now I’ve got to train a new secretary!” On his way out, Parker stops to chat with Foswell.

Peter: “Mr. Foswell, you don’t really believe that jazz you wrote about Spider-Man being the Big Man, do you?”
Foswell: “Look, son, I write what Jameson tells me to! I’d say that Peter Rabbit was the Big Man if he told me to! You don’t work on this newspaper and argue with ol’ prune face!”

Peter returns home and wonders why Jameson is so eager to cast suspicion on Spider-Man as the Big Man. Could JJJ be trying to distract people from his own secret life as the crime lord? And how is Peter going to catch the Big Man? After some thought, he comes up with what he thinks is a good plan.

Act 1, Scene 8: Forest Hills High School
Doom Pool: D10

Peter’s plan is put into action.

Flash: “You mean to that you figured out who the Big Man is, when nobody else has any idea?!! You’re nuts, Parker!”
Peter: “Yeah? Well, you’ll sing a different tune when I tell my theory to the police and get a big fat reward for helping to nab him!”

Flash tries to dissuade Peter from flappin’ his lips – “your life won’t be worth a nickel if the Enforcers find out!” but that’s exactly what Peter is after. A ratty-looking old man (hanging around the high school? Creepy!) overhears Peter’s claim and thinks he can get paid by the Enforcers for the tip.

When the Big Man hears the news, he is surprised.

Big Man: “Peter Parker? How did he find out?!”
Montana: “You mean you know him, boss?”
Big Man: “Of course I know him! Don’t stand here asking fool questions! Go get him!”

Meanwhile, Peter calls the police and tells them to be on the alert for a signal from Spider-Man. He then goes wandering through “the loneliest parts” of NYC until the Enforcers pick him up. Fancy Dan spills that the Big Man knows Parker, which makes Peter wonder if it really is Jonah. They get in a car and drive off to their HQ, which is… a multilevel parking structure. Who ever heard of a city’s crime rackets being run out of a parking lot?

Act 1, Scene 9: The Big Man’s HQ
Doom Pool: D10

Parker is throw into a… cell? or at least a concrete room with an iron grate over the window, to await the Big Man’s summons. Once the Enforcers are gone, Peter changes into Spider-Man and pries open the bars on the window.

Elsewhere in the parking structure, we see that the Big Man has summoned “all the racket bosses in the city.” The police have been catching a lot of their mooks lately, and so the Big Man has orders for new precautions for everyone to take. Spider-Man lurks on a raised platform overlooking the gathering, and he realizes that he’s stumbled onto something big. But before he can alert the police, a goon manages to sneak up on him!

This part of the parking garage apparently also functions as an auto shop. Scene distinctions are Lots of Cars and Auto Shop. The crime bosses are a mob (solo D4, buddy 2D6, team 4D8; grab D6, swarm D6, focus SFX; crime expert, combat rookie).

The Watcher has to spend the D10 from the doom pool (now empty) to trump Spider-Man’s spider-senses. One of the criminals spots the wall-crawler, and tries to shove him off the platform and down onto the auto shop floor, where the mob awaits.

Criminal: Solo D4 + Tough Guy D8 + Grab D6 + Combat D6 = D4+2D6+D8 (3, 3, 5, 7) = 12 and D6 effect.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Hard-Luck Hero D4 + Senses D8 + Acrobatics D8 = D4+3D8 (2, 3, 2, 6) = 9 and D8 effect.
Peter gains 1 PP (2 total) for the D4 distinction.
The criminal’s effect die is stepped down to D4 by Spider-Man’s superior effect die.
Spider-Man takes D4 physical stress.

One of the criminals grabs Spider-Man and throws him from the raised platform, into the mob below.

Guard: “Big Man! Up here – I just caught a spy! Spider-Man!”
Big Man: “After him – all of you! He must not escape! Get him!”
Spider-Man: “Don’t be such an eager beaver, Big Man! I’m not goin’ anywhere!”

Round 1 starts. Spider-Man goes first, and he will lay into the mob of crime bosses.

Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Wisecracker D8 + Strength D10 + Combat D8 = 3D8+D10 (6, 8, 5, 5) = 14 and D10 effect.
Peter gains 1 PP (3 total) for rolling a 1, and the doom pool adds a D6 (D6 total).
Criminals: Team 4D8 + Foolhardy D4 + Combat D6 + Spider-Man’s Stress D4 = 2D6+4D8 (4, 5, 8, 5, 5, 3, 4) = 13 and D8 effect. The criminals are using their Focus SFX to convert 2D4 into D6.
The Watcher adds a D6 to the doom pool (2D6 total) for the D4 distinction.
Spider-Man knocks out one of the mob’s team dice (3D8 remaining).

Spider-Man: “No need to rush, boys! Take your time! I’ll see that you all get what’s coming to you!”

Spider-Man picks the mob to go next. They do their best to take our hero down!

Criminals: Team 3D8 + Foolhardy D4 + Swarm D6 + Combat D6 + Spider-Man’s Stress D4 = 3D6+3D8 (1, 4, 2, 8, 5, 5) = 13 and D8 effect. The criminals are using their Focus SFX to convert 2D4 into D6.
The Watcher steps up a D6 in the doom pool (D6+D8) for the D4 distinction.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Auto Shop D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 = 3D8+D10 (6, 7, 2, 8) = 15 and D8 effect. Peter will spend 1 PP (2 left) to keep his effect die.
Spider-Man inflicts D8 physical stress on the mob of criminals. However, he needs a D10 to remove one of the mob’s team dice.

Spider-Man leaps over the criminals trying to swarm him and lands in a car, a 2-door convertible. He kicks both side doors open, knocking over nearby crooks.

Spider-Man: “Say! I’ve always wanted to drive one of these sporty jobs! Hold it, boys! I’m makin’ this trip solo!”

He picks Fancy Dan to go next. Fancy Dan will give some emotional support to Ox, and then have Ox go next. Ox grabs the rear fender of the car and tries to flip it over with Spider-Man still inside.

Ox: Team D8 + As Big as an Ox D8 + Strength D6 + Fancy Dan’s Support D8 + Spider-Man’s Stress D4 = D4+D6+D8+D10 (4, 6, 5, 2) = 11 and D10 effect. Ox is using his Focus SFX to convert 2D8 into D10.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Wisecracker D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 = 3D8+D10 (4, 7, 4, 9) = 16 and D8 effect.

Ox lifts the car up, but Spider-Man jumps out.

Fancy Dan: “Atta boy, Ox!”
Ox: “That little man ain’t goin’ anywhere if I can help it!”
Spider-Man: “Oh well – I prefer a four-speed gearbox anyway!”

Ox selects Montana to go next. Montana helps the Big Man by giving him a boost onto a raised platform that has a lot of oil drums on it, handing him a D8 asset. The Big Man goes next, and he rolls the oil drums off the platform and into Spider-Man’s path.

Big Man: Team D8 + Auto Shop D8 + Oil Drums Asset D8 + Spider-Man’s Stress D4 = D4+3D8 (2, 5, 7, 2) = 12 and D8 effect.
Spider-Man: Solo D8 + Wisecracker D8 + Reflexes D10 + Acrobatics D8 = 3D8+D10 (7, 1, 4, 1) = 11 and D4 effect.
Peter gains 1 PP (3 total) for rolling the 1’s, and the doom pool gains a D8 (D6+2D8 total).
The Big Man inflicts a D8 Oil Drums complication on Spider-Man.

Big Man: “I stopped him for you, you clumsy oafs! Now get him!”
