Avengers Movie Alt - TOTALLY SPOILER-Y (And/Or MHRP-Related)

What I want to know is where they're going with Nick Fury. There's no reason to introduce Maria Hill unless Fury's getting the boot sometime soon. Given that he blatantly disobeyed The Council, he's probably on thin ice with them. I wouldn't mind seeing the second film be Secret War, ending with Fury being removed from SHIELD. That leaves Hill in charge (after Agent Coulson's untimely and sad passing) for the third when things get really charged.

I don't see Secret War being likely. Not big enough.

Just saw it a SECOND time with a couple of friends from MHRP Playgroup A. In fact, we caught the late show after our gaming session. And got out of the theater at 1:37AM local time. The bad news: I have to work in the morning! The good news: I have a legal prescription for daily long-acting stimulant medication! :D

To my mild surprise, I liked it even better the second time around. That is, the first time I liked it pretty well while this time I loved it. There's still no saving the exchange between Loki and Thor atop Stark Tower - the "There is only -da-da-DA! - THE WAR!" "So be it!" one. The timing's all wrong and the script isn't doing the actors any favors. But elsewhere I saw tons of little touches I missed first time around.

Just as a for instance: in the Calcutta scene when the little girl comes to get Banner, we see her at the top of the stairs crying for him to come. Her eyes skitter sideways like they do when you're lying. That's an impressive detail to bother getting right with a child actor.

Did NOT change my opinion that Scarlett Johansson makes the movie. Liked her work even better on review. And Mark Ruffalo is so, so watchable. Give me Hulk movies stat! And Downey's still great the second time around, but that's no surprise.

Meanwhile, if they're going to do something with less cosmic Avengers foes in the second movie I vote for: The Living Bombs!

Or, you know, someone else.

I've heard some talk that Thanos might be a set up for Thor 2. Not Avengers. Makes sense. The end of Iron Man 2 was a set up for Thor. So... could be.

Heh...and to me, this line always bothers me in the comics. I keep waiting for another character in the panel to get a line saying, "Dude...we're all standing right here...how much more can we 'assemble?'"

And don't get me started on the team name "Avengers." What exactly are they avenging again?

The movie did try to save the name thing and these are long time petty gripes. Nothing worth really debating...just mocking.

:D

My only real disappointment was not getting a powerful Thor speech/boast/challenge.

When he was standing on the Empire State Building, calling on the lightning to bottleneck the forces flowing through the portal, we should have gotten that speech.

"You dare threaten this world...that is your mistake...for I have chosen to defend this world! You would claim this world as your own? Well I...Thor Odinson..God of Thunder...SAY THEE NAY!!!"

*Loud crack of thunder and the sky and portal light up with powerful lightning strikes.*

Something like that...but...you know...with more thought and better writing.

I would be just fine with that.

Keep rolling the movies into each other...keep them all building the next film.

If I've read correctly, we've got Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Captain America 2 all getting ready to enter production. With the money that Avengers is making, there is just no way that we don't get an Avengers 2.

Keep them coming, I say, but keep a solid focus on how they all can tie into the combined epics.

On the Whedon front. I'm fine with in-depth character driven stories, but I do hope most of those plots stick to the individual films. The Avenger's flicks should be epic. And I soooo want to see more of the Hulk REALLY able to rip things up and SMASH!

That's what the brute needs!

Yeah, I agree. Leave the character development for individual films; unless it's character conflict. That fits into a team like the avengers. Team comics are usually less about development when the characters have their own books, and more about action.

I think these terms are too imprecise to even argue with. :)

Well, I think one could safely say that major changes (mental, physical, or super-powered) rarely (if ever?) happen to superhero team members that have their own book(s).

Captain America, standing on top of a car, gives orders to the cops. Cop refuses. "Why should I take orders from you?"

Cap then fights the Chitauri and spends a PP for an extra effect die, and uses that to make the cop change his mind.

I love this system.

But did not spend a PP for a third effect die to use on the US Department of Defense . . .

(I translate "[in]sufficiently realistic in its treatment of military bureaucracy" as "ticked off movie implies we'd nuke our own city." But whatevs. ;) )
