Why was the Flash rolling against the doom pool?

I figured it was for color. Running out to find this boat and having to run over open water was a scenario that could have produced some complication or, possibly, affected the power points or doom pool in play.

I don't see how it could, to be honest. "The Flash runs across the water to a boat" sounds like a classic example of something that shouldn't be a roll, as per OM06.

I disagree because that's not how I would have described it to my players. It's no more routine than "batman drives the batmobile across town. time is of the essence and there's heavy traffic". The odds are in the favor of the player in either case, let's face it, but there's a chance to spice things up dramatically depending on what's rolled. you could easily make it an issue if the player had rolled opportunities as "every second you waste, Hydro Man puts lives in danger. Who knows what's going on over there? If he knows the mayday was sent, it could mean life or death. Better not be late, Barry." or if the Watcher had rolled opportunities as "Flash creates a giant wave behind him that can easily be used to slide into the fight in style as a power stunt"

that's what I like about the system. I can make this an issue and choose what gets added to the dramatic narrative as dice rolled with actual consequences. Trying something bold, challenging, or dangerous? Maybe just showing off? It's up to you, as per OM06.

Let's Play the Flash (part 2)

Postby BaronVonStevie » Fri May 18, 2012 7:05 am

Enough trash talk from the Scarlet Speedster, Hydro Man isn’t going down without a fight. It begins. Going to throw in a couple scene distinctions; ON A BOAT and SLIPPERY FLOOR. Time for a water blast (d6 solo, d8 thug, d8 water blast; 12/d6) and the Flash peels rubber after a split second of hesitation (not a whole lot of room here. d10 solo, d4 on a boat, d12 speed; 11/d12. Flash takes d4 physical stress, gets a PP). The water blast slings him across the deck of the boat, but Flash turns away and avoids the brunt of it. Flash zips around at high speeds, looking to land a shot on his enemy (Vortex SFX: d10 solo, d8 fastest man alive, d12 super speed, d6 SFX; 19/d10) and Hydro Man looks to be in trouble (d6 solo, d8 dumb as a post, d8 intangible; d6 from the doom pool to include a third die, 10/d4. Hydro Man takes d12 complication called "torn apart"). Flash is literally causing Hydro Man to fly apart as he approaches high speeds. Hydro Man focuses his strength and goes to swat Flash away (d6 solo, d8 vengeful, d8 strength, d4 physical stress; 9/d6). Flash slides under the attack and probably rips part of the deck open (d10 solo, d8 showoff, d12 reflexes; 16/d10). Time to send this clown packing! Flash balls his fist up and lets her fly (d10 solo, d8 fastest man alive, d12 speed, d12 torn apart; 16/d12) and Hydro Man tries to turn to water and let Flash’s fist pass harmlessly through him (d6 solo, d8 thug, d8 intangible; 13/d6. Hydro is out!). Flash goes “you’re all wet!” and splits Hydro Man’s head open in a giant splash of water. He collapses to the deck of the boat in defeat as Flash notifies the authorities.

Doom Pool: none
Flash: 1pp, 1XP, d4 physical stress
Hydro Man: stressed out (complication)

notes...

liked it. I really did feel like the Flash during this. His SFX may need to be looked at more. You can't just test once and call it a day, but this was fun. Flash is kind of a beast.

Very cool, BVS! Thanks for that.

I like reading others' "play-tests" to help get my own creative juices flowing. One of the things I'm chewing on at the moment is Scene Distinctions. You mention the availability of two of these in your scenario above. And you even employed the use of one giving The Flash a d4/PP for "ON A BOAT". Do you see any scenario where he could use "ON A BOAT" for a d8? How would you describe that in the Action Scene so that Flash could get a d8 (advantageous?) instead?

Just curious. And thanks again for taking the time to share!

let's say Flash is trying to dodge a ranged attack. maybe he tries to use the wheel house as cover. boom! d8 advantage.
