Scene Complications

Postby Grimmshade » Sat May 19, 2012 3:34 pm

Sometimes a complication on a character doesn't feel right. Spidey webbing up a door to keep some thugs inside a room for example. Area Attack doesn't really work, because if some goons are not affected and some are, it doesn't really fit the narrative. Basically good 'ol Webhead is putting a complication on the door itself, one that the thugs will have to remove if they want to get through that door. Problem is, I have received a bit of pushback on this as its an easy way to affect a group without area attacking. I personally see no problem with it, but I'd like to hear some thoughts!

I think it depends on how much it limits. If, as you say, it's "you can't pass through this door until you break down the d8 Webbing complication", but the villains still have other opportunities to act -- perhaps they can just waste time going around another way, or they can fight another hero who's on the right side of the webbing -- I'd see no problem with it.

If it's really complicating all the villains totally, then yeah, I'd think you ought have to spend the Area Attack / PP / whatever.

Right, I personally don't find it bothersome. In fact I think its a good solution to these situations. The thugs can either grab a sofa and try to batter down the d8 Webbed door, or they can spend some time running around a different way to get at Spidey.

I kinda agree with the scene complications and already used them myself. In one scenario, with somewhat new players, I made a "Smoke Screen" scene distinction. But no one happened to use it because it was optional I suppose.

It would have worked out much better as a d6/d8 "Smoke Screen" complication, for villains and good guys alike, since it's smoke and it's not picky who gets blinded.

Same goes for stuff like reinforcements or automated turrets.
