Stressing out over nothing..

Stressing out over nothing..

Postby Atombomb » Mon May 21, 2012 2:17 pm

So, on pg OM25 there is an example of Cyclops using a PP to spend his d6 in Emotional Stress in his roll against the Hellfire goon.

And as I read the example, I thought..WHY?!?!?

Heck, just waste that point on a d6 additional die and don't step up the stress afterwards.

Or better yet, perform a stunt and get a d8. And again not step up that emotional stress to d8.

Am I missing something here?

It seems that using stress in your roll is only worthwhile when it is d10 or d12. And even then that's not a good idea IMO.

Yeah, that was just an example of the mechanic but you nailed it...unless he was narratively driven to 'rage out' (he is soooooo sensitive...) then he actually loses out by doing this.

However overthinking the mechanics isnt always the best way to tell a story...

Well I guess he could do both "get a stunt die" and "use his stress die"?

This. If you already have a stunt die, it'd cost you 2PPs to add another—1PP for the stunt and another to include a second die from the same category. This gives you an equivalent die for half the cost.

That being said, the example given is a bit odd in that there are better ways to do what they did. However, it was a good idea to show the rule in as simple of terms as possible.

Also note, Cyclops plays kind of dumb in the examples. One set of examples even ends with "Or I could have done this for a MUCH better option. Guess I should have thought the action through." It might be intentional that he's "mistakes a new player makes"
