Basic Game?

Basic Game?

Postby Malefic Polyhedron » Wed Apr 11, 2012 8:44 am

I was wondering if the use of the phrase “Basic Game” in the title “Marvel Heroic Role-playing Basic Game” was significant. I remember back in the day when the original TSR box set came out, it too was a basic game and a few years later an advanced box set was released. Anyone have any thoughts as to whether or not MWP might be giving us a subtle hint that they are planning on traveling down that same path? And if so any speculation on what would be in an “Advanced” operations manual?

Everything I've heard suggests that the use of Basic Game is just a different way of saying "Core Rulebook." The Basic Game has all of the information you need to play a Marvel campaign, including iconic versions of the Marvel superheroes. The Event books will have setting specific information, possibly new power traits, SFX, limits, etc., and will definitely have different versions of the heroes that are unique to the Event.

I kind of assumed that that was the case but it was fun to speculate. I loved the old TSR game and thought it might be a sly call back to the old game and was really curious what directions people thought an "advanced" game might go.

From things Cam has said on RPGnet...

The Basic Game is all the information you need to play. It is basic because it has a mini-Event rather than a full one. You have the rules you'll need to play, data files, and at least a couple sessions worth of story already worked out for you. But you don't need anything else to play.

Event books will have two versions. One will have the same Operations Manual as the Basic Game, while the other will not. Both versions will have the data files and story information to run that Event, as well as any additional stuff to tweak the system to handle that Event.

I haven't spotted a huge amount of information on the sorts of tweaks to expect. It's mostly been statements similar to, "This Event is a bit more cosmic than the baseline, so the book has rules to handle characters of a more cosmic scale." None of it has sounded necessary to play the game outside that Event, nor has it sounded like the changes are particularly big ones.

It also opens up the possibility for us to put out an Advanced Game later on with more rules. :) But the Basic Game is not a core rulebook in the traditional sense. I mean, yes, it has all the rules and an adventure and pregens, but so do the Premium Edition Event Books.

Coolsville! I am thrilled with the basic game, but given what a fantastic job you and your team did with it I'd love to see what sort of a spin you could put on an Advanced Game.

You realize that now I need to run a faux AD&D game using MHR. Everyone will have two power sets: The first is for race, and the second for class. And I'll need to keep making a big deal about how race and class are different things, and that the rules are ADVANCED.

I'm just going to leave these here

I appreciate the links, but I'd definitely be doing things based on the D&D I used to play, which would be AD&D 1st and 2nd edition. I don't remotely like 4e, and the setting changes (Eladrin? Seriously?) irk me.

Just goes to show how opinions vary.

:D

D&D Basic, & AD&D 1st & 2nd Editions drove me away from D&D. Third edition brought me back and 4th Edition fixed even more problems that I had with 3rd.

Heh...everything is relative. The good news is that our beloved games never go away. They can always be pulled off of the shelves no matter how many other versions come out.

Back on topic...

An Advanced Set musing...

Huh...to be honest, short of even more power/sfx/limit options/examples and more datafile examples...I can't really even think of more "rules" that I'd like to see.

I wouldn't be surprised if something comes out someday where I have to say, "Oh...of course I wanted that too," but I think the Basic Game rules have really given me most anything I need to run just about any narrative focused game that I desire.

I really can't think of any rules upgrades or expansions that I'm looking for.

Huh...me at a loss for words or an opinion on a gaming topic. Whoda thunk it?
