Friends, I received my copies of the first edition of the new Dragonlance Chronicles Omnibus today in the mail. When I saw the cover on the book I was shocked and angry.

This cover is not the cover that is now being featured on the Amazon and Barnes and Noble websites. Apparently this new cover was hastily redesigned to replace the Dragonlance logo with the Dungeons & Dragons logo. In the process, the compelling art for the cover was butchered, with much of the new painting by artist Matt Stawicki lopped off in the middle.

In the original art, for example, Tanis is seen running at the enemy, about to draw his sword. In this version, we see only his head cut off at his chin. The background color has been changed to an ugly yellow making the white text unreadable, including the tiny print that provides the titles of the three novels! Looking at this ugly, thrown-together, shoddy edition of the Chronicles, I remember the beautiful artwork created by all the talented artists down through the years and I am heartsick. The fact that WoTC cares so little about a book that means so much to so many is an insult to all the Dragonlance authors and artists and especially to the millions of fans who have loved and supported this world for twenty-six years.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I know how frustrating that can be. I hope it can be corrected in future printings. I don't know, I suppose we're lucky DL has kept in print all these years given how many settings are dead and buried but it always seems to be treated as the Red Headed step child to Forgotten Realms favorite child status. These days I could hardly imagine them putting out another wonderful art book like they did with all the classic art back in the day. I even used some of the classic art from Legends in a report I did back in college on symbolism. Oh well, my particular group is flying out in the black with Serenity right now but as someone who used to play DL and as someone who works with artist frequently it upsets me to hear this. I hope it all works out somehow.

Hi Margaret, my name is Juan, I'm from Argentina. I read the post you made in the dragonlance nexus forum, and I saw this here too.

I just wanted to give you my support on this, I agree with you in that it IS insulting both to the authors and artists, and also to us (readers). I know I know... legally they can do whatever they want... but come on! we are all supposed to be fans of the same things (fantasy that is), and for once I would like to see people respecting the art itself (be it writting the novels, drawing the covers, or just dreaming with the story itself).

Maybe I'm just a dreamer who wishes we all lived in an ideal world where people could respect each other, but I found so many things I could identify with in Dragonlance that it bothers me when I see these kind of things happen to people who put effort in what they do.

Anyway, that's what I think Margaret, just wanted to share it with you.

Dear Margaret

I completely agree, and am truly sorry that WoTC would do such a thing. I hope they realize their mistake, and change the cover art A.S.A.P.

LONG LIVE DRAGONLANCE :-)

0 I agree.
I saw this at Barnes and Noble the other day and thought to myself that this was a particularly ugly repackaging of the books. It wasn't until you mentioned the fact that the Dragonlance title was taken away that I noticed my copy of Dragons of the Hourglass Mage in MM has Dragonlance in small text under the Dungeons and Dragons title. It really is a sad day to see this happening.

Hi, Margaret. I'm a reader from Brasil. I've qalways been a fan of the Dragonlance world and of your novels since I was a teenager. Nowadays I'm a professor and I am still trying to complete my collection. I was happy to know about this new omnibus edition, so that I could give my wife as a gift... but it's shameful. I don't really understand what these publishers are trying to do hiding Dragonlance behind D&D and turning the RPG away from the literature at the same time. I just can imagine what it is for you and Hickman and Elmore and the others who have put so much effort and caring in developing the world of Krynn to see such carelessness.

0 sad..just sad..
I have noticed unfortunately throught the years the abundance of shoddy coverwork decending on the masses.I for one have a complete collection of all dragonlance books..everyone xcept RPG books..dragonlance took me to a world that I have fasinated and loved since I discorvered autum twilight.I made anadventured out oftracking down older copies for the artwork and the allure or the age behind the masterpiece.to see a d&d name on or near these treasures is a complete farce.wotc had made a grievious error..the atrworrk lacks the love and bared emotions of all these literary works of art.I have heard forgotten realms bashed and its harsh..its just simply another world waiting to be journeyed.Dragonlance opened my mind and soul to their world forever and it was that which inspired me to read every R.A. Salvatore book made.all these treasures deserve more.I want to thank every author that has dared to create greatness in the world of Krynn, Toril, Corona & the land of the Vindrasi

0 A A warm hello.
M Margaret,
T This is very sad news to hear. I must admit that because of you, Tracy Hickman and a friend in highschool, I am now a writer myself! I loved the chronicles. Fell in love with the characters, and the art. It was about 15 years ago when I started to read those books. I never read leisurely before then. I thank you very much for writing those books and inspiring me to write and create worlds of my own! I hope that WoTC wakes up and sees the fan base that you guys have and show more respect to you, the other writers, the artists and the readers by showing more care in the future! Much luck and happy NaNoWriMO!
